FAQs
Powerful Electric of Long Island Inc
When is a service upgrade needed?
A service upgrade may be needed when your existing electrical service does not have enough capacity for your home's current or future electrical needs, or when existing service equipment needs replacement due to damage, wear and tear or to update to current code standards. Adding an EV charger, pool, heat pump, addition or other large electrical load does not automatically mean you need to upgrade your service. We evaluate the existing equipment, it's condition, available capacity and new electrical loads to determine what is actually needed.Do I need a permit for electrical work?
It depends on the type of work and where your property is located. Service upgrades, generators, pools, additions, renovations and many other electrical projects require permits and/or electrical inspections. Requirements can vary between towns and villages throughout Suffolk County. We determine what is required for the scope of your project and coordinate the applicable electrical inspections.Do you provide free electrical estimates?
Yes, we provide estimates for projects with a defined scope of work. Troubleshooting is different. When something isn't working and the cause is unknown, an electrician needs to test and diagnose the problem before the necessary repair can be determined. That is considered a service call rather than a free estimate. We explain how your particular call will be handled before scheduling. What is whole-house surge protection?
Whole-house surge protection is installed at your electrical service or panel to help protect appliances, electronics and other equipment from damaging voltage surges. Unlike a plug-in surge strip, it provides protection at the electrical system level. It cannot prevent every type of electrical damage and is not a lightning protection system, but it provides an important additional layer of protection for today's homes and the increasing amount of electronic equipment in them. What electrical upgrades are common in older Long Island homes?
Older Long Island homes may benefit from upgrades such as improved grounding and bonding, GFCI and AFCI protection, whole-house surge protection, replacement of outdated or damaged electrical equipment, additional circuits and evaluation of older wiring. Some homes also have aluminum branch-circuit wiring that requires special attention. Every home is different, so we evaluate the existing system and recommend upgrades based on its condition, safety and how the home is being used today.Do you provide electrical work for new construction and renovations?
Yes. We provide complete electrical work for new homes, additions and renovations throughout Suffolk County, from rough wiring through final completion. Our work includes electrical services, lighting, devices, dedicated equipment circuits, lighting controls and more. Yes. We work with general contractors, property managers, HOAs and multi-family communities on both ongoing electrical needs and larger planned projects. This includes repairs and renovations, common-area electrical, site and street lighting, clubhouses, service upgrades, troubleshooting and new installations. We understand the importance of scheduling, communication and coordination when work involves residents, management and multiple trades.Do you perform commercial and public works electrical work?
Yes. Powerful Electric provides commercial electrical services throughout Suffolk County, including renovations, repairs, lighting, service work, equipment connections and new installations. We also perform qualifying New York public works electrical projects and maintain the registrations required for that work. We work directly with business owners, general contractors and other trades. When is an electrical problem an emergency?
Some electrical problems should not wait. Burning odors, smoke, arcing or sparking, unusually hot electrical equipment, repeated breaker tripping, water in or around electrical equipment, or a sudden partial loss of power can indicate a potentially serious problem. If you believe there is an immediate fire or life-safety risk, contact emergency services. Otherwise, avoid using the affected equipment or circuit and contact a licensed electrician for guidance. Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?
A circuit breaker trips when it detects a condition it is designed to protect against. A trip can be caused by an overloaded circuit, a short circuit, a ground fault, faulty equipment or another electrical problem. Resetting a breaker once may be appropriate, but a breaker that repeatedly trips should not simply be reset over and over. If the cause isn't obvious, an electrician should troubleshoot the circuit to determine why it is happening.
